Addressing the Talent Gap:

The GPS Insight ‘You are the Reason’ Skilled Trades Scholarship Program

Recruiting and retaining skilled young talent is a major challenge across the fleet and field industries, significantly worsening during the COVID-19 years. A long-standing and growing problem for fleet and field companies, the accelerating shortage of experienced workers combined with a historic inability to attract younger, tech-savvy workers, makes for one of the greatest threats to the future of the industry.

GPS Insight is addressing this issue with the launch of the GPS Insight Skilled Trades Scholarship Program. The scholarship will help advance skilled trades within our industries, increase community involvement, and promote goodwill among customers.

The new program will award two scholarships for $10,000 each to students planning to pursue full-time skilled trades study at a college or accredited vocational-technical school in the 2023-2024 academic year. The program is now accepting nominations from GPS Insight customers to empower the skilled trade technicians of tomorrow.

“GPS Insight customers are the reason we care, the reason we learn, and the reason we embrace change,” Gary Fitzgerald, CEO of GPS Insight. “We are humbled by everything our customers teach us, and to pay this forward by enabling students to achieve their goals is a great honor. We hope these scholarships will provide roadways to success for the future of fleet and field.”

The Challenge

A key issue for fleet and field service is to make the industry more attractive to recruit, cultivate, and retain top talent. Millennials and Gen Z have different expectations of the companies they work for compared to previous generations. Younger workers want to join an industry that is innovative and utilizes the technologies they use every day, at work and at home, and will avoid careers that appear to be out of step with the future.

Fleet and field services might have a reputation as old-school, roll up your sleeves, and grab a wrench places, but in reality they are becoming much more high-tech. The industry must take distinct steps—upskilling, reskilling and combating false impressions—to stem the talent outflow and increase the talent inflow for a more stable future.

According to research from Service Council, 70% of field service organizations are concerned about the loss of knowledge from a retiring field workforce. As part of the GPS Insight goal to address the skilled field tech shortage, the Skilled Trades Scholarship program will address a shrinking talent pool intersecting with the current skilled trades gap. As workers retire and the workforce skews younger, the need for younger techs becomes more important.
