The air is crisp, the days are getting shorter, and there’s a chill in the air (check local listings).

We love a good ghost story especially this time of year, but what’s really scary is what’s ahead on the road. From distracted drivers to unexpected hazards, the real-world dangers facing fleets can be actually frightening.

At GPS Insight, we’ve seen it all. We’ve collected some of the craziest and most unbelievable fleet tracking stories caught on a dash cam…but thankfully, the right technology kept full-blown disasters from happening.

The Near-miss Hall of Fame

You’ve heard an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In the world of fleet management, a single second of dash cam footage can be worth thousands of dollars.

For instance, a truck making a legal turn on a green light, only to have a car run a red light and smash into it. The car driver immediately (and incorrectly!) blamed the truck driver. The fleet was immediately contacted and the dash cam footage was sent to the police and insurance company. Without that footage, the company could have been responsible for a liability claim and damage costs…and the driver at fault would have gotten away with it.

Another crazy story? Take the time a distracted driver swerved directly into the path of one of our customer’s trucks. The truck driver – alerted by our system – was able to brake just in time. The entire incident was caught on camera, proving the driver’s innocence while alerts saved the fleet from an expensive accident claim.

These stories are a reminder of how quickly things can go wrong…and how important it is to have the right tools in place.

Real-world Use of Dash Camera Evidence

Of course there are close calls, but the numbers tell a scary story, too. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving accounts for thousands of accidents each year. In fact, in 2023, 3,275 people were killed and an additional 324,819 people injured in crashes involving distracted drivers. There are also huge financial implications, like rising insurance premiums, legal fees, and vehicle downtime. A single accident can cost a fleet tens of thousands of dollars.

More than money, it’s about your drivers and their safety. A dash cam helps keep your drivers and your business safe. Video provides evidence in the case of an accident, protects your business from fraudulent claims, and can even help you coach drivers on safer habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Near-miss incidents show where crashes almost happened. Tracking them helps fleets identify risky driving patterns, road hazards, distraction, close following, and other issues before they lead to accidents.
Dash cameras give fleets video evidence of what happened before, during, and after a close call. This helps managers understand the cause, protect drivers from false claims, and use real footage for safety coaching.
Tracking near-misses helps fleets move from reacting to accidents to preventing them. Each close call can reveal a safety gap, such as distracted driving, poor following distance, unsafe turns, or hazards caused by other drivers.
Use near-miss data to spot repeat behaviors, coach drivers, update safety policies, and identify high-risk routes or situations. Video and alert data can show where small changes in driving habits may prevent serious incidents.
Common causes include distracted driving, sudden lane changes, running red lights, unsafe following distance, speeding, poor visibility, road hazards, and unpredictable behavior from other drivers.
Dash cameras capture road-facing and, when available, driver-facing footage that shows the conditions around a close call. They help fleets see hazards such as distracted drivers, sudden stops, unsafe turns, close following, and near collisions that may otherwise go unreported.
