How to motivate your employees with healthy competition via gamification

The answer is using GPS Insight driver scorecards for gamification. Gamification is the process of taking the core elements of game playing, such as point scoring and competition with others and applying them in different areas of activity. In your case, we will look at how you can create a healthy environment of competition using driver scorecards to correct driver behavior.
SET YOUR GOALS
The specific measurables (or rules) that will be used for gamification will depend on what type of company you have and what your fleet challenges are.
If your goal is to increase revenue, then you might want to gamify things like the number of jobs completed in a day or time spent on each job site. If your main goal is to increase safety, then using metrics such as speeding, harsh braking, and rapid acceleration are great measurables to include in the rules of your competition. If you are a government entity trying to become more of a green fleet, then looking at idling metrics is the place to start.
No matter the industry, it will be important to identify your specific challenges and the areas that will help you achieve your goals. These metrics will be the foundation to your competition. It’s important to identify these first and clearly define them for your drivers.No one likes playing a game with confusing or ambiguous rules, and neither will they.
The way that these metrics will be measured is a feature known as Custom Metrics.
Custom Metrics is the system in which you will build your scorecard and determine which driving events to include. The most common events to record and measure are speeding, harsh braking, and rapid acceleration. You can also include idling, miles driven, and many other events. You decide which driving event(s) will affect the score more, i.e. putting more of an emphasis on reducing speeding events. Once your custom metrics are set, your scorecard can be generated.
You will also want to set a timeframe for your competition, i.e. weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc., as well as what the reward will be for the winner. The players need to know what they are playing for.
Rewards can be things like a gift card to their favorite restaurant, an extra week of paid vacation, etc. This is where you and your management get to be creative and decide what the motivating factor will be for your drivers.
This will also be your selling point to them.
“How does an extra week of paid vacation sound to you? Whoever has the least amount of idle time this quarter will win this prize!” See how quickly they will want to change their idling behavior after delivering that message.
The key aspect once the competition begins will be displaying the results to the drivers.
This is what will create and sustain their motivation throughout the competition. Inspire your drivers to perform at their best to achieve the results that you are looking for by showing them where they stand against their peers on a daily basis. No one wants to be at the bottom of the scoreboard and neither will your drivers.
One way to do this is to set up a monitor around a common place where they gather, such as the time clock they punch into every morning or a break room.
