While Halloween might make you think about costumes and candy…it makes us think about the shocking scares in your fleet: distracted drivers.
We’ve all seen it on the roads – drivers eating messy meals, looking in the mirror, and of course checking their phones.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has actual statistics to back up how dangerous it can be. For instance, sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for five seconds, which at 55 mph is the equivalent of driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed. Being a ‘good driver’ isn’t enough. The NTHSA reports that in 2023 alone, 324,819 people were injured, and 3,275 people lost their lives due to distracted driving.
GPS Insight Helps Prevent Distracted Driving Events
While these statistics are definitely scary, we can help. At GPS Insight, our solutions can capture distracted driving actions before they cause an accident. Let’s look at some scenarios and real-life examples.
Time for a meal: Eating is both a manual and visual distraction that takes a driver’s hands and eyes away from the road for minutes at a time. Even longer, if the meal is really good! With GPS Insight, our cameras can detect and alert the driver to pay attention…and park before finishing their food.
Fog: Vaping and smoking inside the cab can cause an issue due to manual and visual obstruction. First, there’s the reaching for, activating, and holding the device or cigarette. Then, there’s the vapor or smoke that can obstruct the view.
Devices: Drivers have been recorded using phones or tables to scroll or watch videos. With our cameras, the system quickly warns them against this behavior, and they can turn their attention back to the road. The intent of this audio alert is to notify when the driver is looking down, looking at their phone, or talking on the phone while driving. Specifically, GPS Insight in-cab alerts include:
- The alert is transmitted for “Looking Down” if the vehicle is traveling at greater than 15 mph and the driver has been distracted for a few seconds.
- For “Looking at Phone” and “Talking on Phone”, the alert is transmitted if the vehicle is traveling greater than 5 mph and the driver has been distracted for a few seconds.
- The audio alert [Distracted Driving] is played if the driver is distracted while driving.
- The audio alert will be played again if the driver continues to be distracted for more than 10 seconds.
